Procedure Training Resources

As part of Third Year Orientation, the Procedural Skills Training Session will introduce you to two commonly used clinical procedures:

• Male Foley Catheter insertion
• Female Foley Catheter insertion

You will also receive instruction on:

• Gowning, Gloving and Universal Precautions.

This module provides you with resources that can aid you in preparing for this procedure-based educational activity.

I. Male Foley Catheter

Urethral catheterization may be indicated for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes to decompress the bladder, permit irrigation,
obtain sterile urine, measure urinary output, or measure the residual urinary volume after voiding.

Strategies for Preventing Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI)

• Insert catheters only for appropriated indications
• Leave catheters in place only as long a needed
• Ensure that only properly trainined persons insert and maintain catheters
• Insert catheters using aseptic technique and sterile equipment
• Maintain a closed drainage system
• Maintain unobstructed urine flow
• Observe hand hygeine and Standard Precautions

The checklist below is the checklist used by LUMC as part of its policy for reducing catheter associated urinary tract infections.

II. Female Foley Catheter
