- Inspect the neck and shoulders.
- Instruct the patient to shrug their shoulders (Trapezius)
against resistance to check the degree and symmetry of muscle power.
- Check the full range of motion of neck, noting flexion to the
chest, extension, rotation and tilting towards each shoulder.
- Test for patient's strength by trying to overpower (gently) his
neck
flexion, extension,
and
rotation to either side and lateral
motion.
Normal:
- 30 degree rotation, able to touch chest with chin, 55 degree extension and 40
degree lateral bend.
- No resistance during the range of motion.
- Can resist reasonable power.
