This is a firm brown papule on the scalp of a four year old. The lesion became noticeable at approximately 1 year of age, and has gradually grown larger and darker since. Intradermal nevi are divided into congenital (appearing by first year or so) and noncongenital types. Noncongenital intradermal nevi develop in later childhood and in early adulthood. Many congenital nevi are much larger and darker than the one pictured. Congenital nevi do have a somewhat increased risk (compared to normal skin) of developing melanoma within them.
