About Us
Each year our graduate program has a one-day retreat at which the
graduate students present their research findings in the format of a scientific meeting.
At our recent retreats, we enjoyed stimulating scientific discussions, lunch,
hiking the grounds, and a barbeque. Our annual faculty/student/staff retreat is
typically held at the beautiful Morton Arboretum in
Lisle, IL. The 1700-acre Arboretum - established in 1922 to create an outdoor museum of
woody plants to increase the general knowledge and love of trees and shrubs - features 12
miles of hiking trails through a variety of habitats. Many gardens, lakes and ponds
provide opportunities to learn about unusual flowers, shrubs and trees. The Arboretum is
popular with birders as many species live or pass through the grounds throughout the year.
A Visitor Complex houses a unique Gift Shop and restaurant. The Sterling Morton Library
contains one of the most varied and complete botanical libraries in the country with the
delightful May T. Watts Reading Garden just outside.
