Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine Forms New Department of Medical Education

MAYWOOD, Ill. – Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine (SSOM) has formed a new Department of Medical Education. Under the direction of chair Mark Kuczewski, PhD, and vice-chair William C. McGaghie, PhD, the department will focus on faculty development to create an even more engaging environment for Loyola medical students.

“The Department of Medical Education will build on the strengths of our core faculty,” said Linda Brubaker, MD, dean of the Stritch School of Medicine. “Its mission is to develop current and future colleagues to be Stritch educators who offer a transformative educational experience by developing curricular innovations that contribute to the formation of well-rounded physicians in the Jesuit-Catholic educational tradition.”

The department, approved Sept. 6, 2013, by the Loyola University Chicago Board of Trustees, will play a key role in advancing SSOM’s goal to develop the finest medical educators in the country. It will build a curriculum that will be cutting-edge and yet rooted in the traditions of medicine, creating a firm foundation for the advancement of the physicians of tomorrow.

To increase educational opportunities, it will promote innovation across schools of Loyola University Chicago. Additionally, the department will interact with SSOM and Loyola’s Health Sciences Division institutes, especially the Leischner Institute for Medical Education and Institute for Transformative Professional Education, to foster collaboration among educators and researchers.
