Loyola Launches Health Services Research Program
Research at Loyola University Health System (LUHS) took an important step forward last month with the establishment of the Program in Health Services Research. This program will study how doctors and nurses can provide better health-care at lower costs to more people. Health services research is a burgeoning field that examines such topics as access to health-care, costs, outcomes, patient safety and patient education. The Program in Health Services Research will significantly strengthen the overall commitment to research, which is central to the LUHS mission. Leading the new program is Frances Weaver, PhD, director of the Center for Management of Complex Chronic Care at Edward Hines Jr. Veterans Administration Hospital. Dr. Weaver also is a professor in the Department of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine (SSOM). Joining Dr. Weaver in the Program in Health Services Research are two other Hines-based investigators who have joint appointments at LUHS and Hines: Bridget Smith, PhD (health policy and statistics), and Kevin Stroupe, PhD (health economics). Dr. Smith is an assistant professor and Dr. Stroupe is an associate professor at SSOM. Richard Kennedy, PhD, vice president for research, and Richard Gamelli, MD, dean, SSOM, also played an integral role in establishing the new program.
